Owwww.....

Alright, before we get to the injury, I want you to envision your mother telling you: "Don't play with the knives, Johnny (or whatever your name may be), they are very sharp." Mommy knew what she was talking about!!

Anyways, I was slicing carrots for school snacks yesterday evening, I had one peeled, had the (big) knife over the carrot...

Ya know how carrots are round? Most round things roll very easily. This one was not an exception. (ouch)

So I've gouged the end of my left thumb, there's a lot of blood, but I get a Band-Aid on it, I think it's OK. HOWEVER, I look 20 seconds later, and there is blood all over my hand. That clues in my parents (and myself) that something is very wrong. So I get a paper towel on my hand, but it's already soaking through. Not good. I'm rinsing it off in the bathroom, but there's almost more blood than water going down the drain, and Mom is thinking "stitches". I, however, have issues with needles going into my skin on purpose!

I get more paper towel, and Dad (who doesn't like blood, BTW) drives me in to the emergency room. Ya know it's bad when... Anyways, I get a record made up at the hospital, since it's never been bad enough for me to go in, and we wait for the doctor. One of the nurses was kind enough to get an actual bandage on my hand for me, but it still hasn't stopped bleeding yet.

The doctor comes in, cleans up the cut, and informs me that I can't get stitches, I cut off so much skin that she won't be able to sew me up. That's a relief, since, as I mentioned, I don't like getting sewn up!

So I get a new bandage, a presure wrap, and I'm out of the hospital, with strict instructions not to get the bandage wet, or to take it off for another 2 days. Still gotta find a baggie and some duct tape so I can have a shower... yeesh.

At church today, I think I got asked a zillion times what I did to myself, got a few hitchiker jokes, and some help doing things, since I can't use my left hand. Trudy advised me to keep my hand elevated, something that's difficult since I use my hand a lot! It was pretty painful when Amy bumped it, but other than that, it went Ok.

Good side to doing this: I get sympathy, and I get out of dish detail! Yippee!!!!!!! Wonder if I'll get out of homework?...

Bad side: I can't do anything that involves little wrappers, it's hard hold things (including Dana's adorable baby, bummer)... ya never realize how useful thumbs are!

Now that I think about it, I also banged myself up on the van door getting into the said van yesterday, had a headache all day. Man, yesterday was Friday the 13th come late!

On the whole, don't do this, it hurts like heck!

It might be nice to point out that I, The Mom Who Dispenses Profound Wisdom To Her Children, offered to drive you to the hospital for stitches, knowing your Dad's loathing of blood and stitches and guts falling out all over the place ... but he said he could handle it! (And he did!)

Glad it's healing up nicely, sweet pea. Having a bum thumb is no fun. And that was not meant to sound as stupid as it apparently does...

Nice to be home!
